“On a Bolder Boulder walk, I got to chatting with an SVP Partner,” says Janet Hatton, a new Partner originally from Minnesota. “I’ve always been very involved as a volunteer, and I asked about opportunities here.
“What I learned about SVP Boulder County was very interesting to me, so I decided to attend an SVP social event in June to learn more. I met so many interesting people – including Claire Clurman, formerly of Attention Homes, where I’d done some volunteer work when I first moved here.
“I thought, ‘If some of my favorite people are involved with SVP, it must be a great organization.’ Then I attended an event at Claire’s house – several more Partners and potential Partners were there, which sealed the deal.”
In particular, Janet is impressed with SVP’s hands-on model. “SVP is a such a great fit for me,” she explains. “It brings together nonprofits with people who have the skills and experiences that nonprofits need.
“Personally, I would like to offer my communications experience, especially working with leaders whose roles require them to run meetings, give presentations, respond to interviews, and so on.
“A good deal of my career has been spent doing communications training, mostly verbal. That’s what I bring to the table – through effective communications, motivating people to action around great ideas.”
Janet is principally focused on causes that help women and/or children. “The future of the world is with younger generations,” she adds. “Working with kids around literacy and critical thinking – advancing an awareness that reading isn’t a job, it’s a pleasure and a way to travel without leaving your backyard – is so important.”
That said, Janet is fond of leaving her own backyard: she studied economics at the University of Freiburg in Germany, and she loves adventure trips – from circumnavigating Mont Blanc to exploring Patagonia.
