New Partner Spotlight: Alexa Loken

by Sabine Kortals Stein

For social entrepreneur and business/career coach Alexa Loken – the most recent addition to our network of Partners–joining SVP Boulder County was a carefully considered decision.

“I’d read and heard about SVP several times in different contexts,” she recalls. “I also literally googled Boulder County nonprofits seeking opportunities for engagement. And I remember reading an article about an organization that SVP was involved with, providing career coaching for youth.”

As she learned more about SVP, Alexa – who earned a master’s degree in media, culture, and communication from New York University, and served as adjunct professor of entrepreneurship at CU Boulder – found herself increasingly intrigued by the SVP model, and opportunities to work with a range of local nonprofits in various capacities.

“From one-offs to three-year engagements, I really appreciate how SVP matches Partners’ time, schedules and expertise with the shorter – or longer – term needs of our community’s nonprofits,” she says. “SVP is an organization that attracts other ‘helpers’ to make an efficient, really useful impact, collectively … and to actually make the world a better place.”

Having held a variety of positions in every sector – tech, startups, academia, nonprofits, and more –Alexa brings a commensurately broad perspective to our Partner network and the nonprofits we serve.

“I love strategic planning, and making goals that are both practical and actionable,” she adds, describing herself as both realistic and idealistic. “I love promoting the causes that I believe in.

“Cause-based marketing is so important and necessary. If people don’t hear about you, your ability to make an impact is limited.”

Originally from the Bay Area, Alexa has also lived in Washington, D.C., as well as New York (where she went to grad school), Austin, and even a year in Hawaii. Currently based in Longmont, Alexa and her family continue to spend winter months in Austin where she keeps busy as adjunct professor of business communication at St. Edward’s University.

Welcome, Alexa!
