Since its founding, the Zonta Foothills Club of Boulder County Foundation has worked to create opportunities for women and girls to thrive. Their work is grounded in a mission to support education, leadership, and economic stability. As an all-volunteer organization, the Zonta Foothills Club has 30 members who are committed to service and advocacy for local and international efforts. They meet monthly and support projects that have a direct impact on women and families. Pam Clifton Malzbender, the President of the Zonta Foothills Club of Boulder County shares, “The Zonta Foothills Club of Boulder County was chartered in 1985. We are a member of Zonta International and our vision is to build a better world for women and girls.”
With nearly three decades in the organization, Pam shared, “I began as a volunteer almost twenty-seven years ago.” She adds, “As a mother of two daughters, I wanted to work with women for women and The Zonta Foothills Club was a wonderful way for me to do just that. For many years we were a small Club that raised money to support local women by selling coffee and tulip bulbs. Then about fifteen years ago, we created the Zonta Foothills Foundation, which allowed us to expand our fundraising efforts and launch scholarships for higher education and other programs.”
One of Zonta’s exciting recent initiatives is the creation of a scholarship for women working in climate and climate-related fields. The Zonta Foothills Climate Justice Scholarship is available to University of Colorado Boulder students who are working to improve climate justice around the world. This initiative highlights Zonta’s adaptability and commitment to addressing global challenges that impact women while advancing their education and careers. It is one of seven scholarship programs that the Foundation provides for women pursuing post-secondary education.
Pam explains, “Our Club members and foundation also support young leaders through our Z Club programs. These high school and college level leadership Clubs give young people the opportunity to develop skills for success along with school applications and life skills.”
Zonta’s EducateZ Program stands out as one of the foundation’s most significant achievements over the past year. “It began in 2012 as just an idea and this past year, we amplified our impact, awarding $26,000 in scholarships and other academic support. We also distributed over 7,000 books to groups of all ages through the free libraries we maintain at food banks around Boulder County. Finally, we recently started a third Z Club for young professional women to find a way to connect and support one another,” said Pam.
While Zonta is proud of their recent accomplishments, like many nonprofits, they have also faced challenges. “The biggest challenge, of course, is funding and community awareness of our organization,” Pam admits. While their work has achieved significant impact, ensuring consistent support and visibility remains an ongoing effort.
Pam encourages community members to engage in several ways: “You can become a passionate volunteer by joining our organization. Whatever amount of time you can commit it will help advance women and girls locally. and around the world. Donations are also vital; you can donate to our foundation through Colorado Gives Day or our website.”
