During this holiday season of celebrating joy and peace, many people in the world may not have enough food for their families, let alone gifts to share. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Boulder County CROP Hunger Walk. People from faith communities all across Boulder County have been walking and raising funds to help mitigate the food insecurity crisis in Boulder County and beyond for a very long time, but the need is greater than ever.
Boulder County Community Food Share (CFS) has been a major beneficiary of the walk since its inception and, during those 40 years has received 24% of the funds raised every year. Since the walk has raised over one million dollars over those years, CFS has received nearly $250,000. See the link at the bottom of this article to watch a testimonial video created by CFS to thank Boulder County CROP Hunger Walk and talk about CFS’s relationship with Church World Service, the organizer of all the walks across the United States.
Since CFS is the major food bank in Boulder County, from which over 40 nonprofit organizations receive food and funds to buy food to help those needing food assistance in the county, and since CFS was also at one time an investee of SVP Boulder County, SVP has had a relationship with them for many years. There are many ways to help CFS on your own, but one way, which can also help hungry people BEYOND Boulder County as well, would be to sponsor our partner, Dianne Ladd, who has participated in this walk for all forty years, including this year’s walk, which happened on October 12th in Lafayette. Dianne is a member of the Boulder Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (BVUUF), which hosted the walk, and is the co-leader of the team at BVUUF, as well as the co-director of the walk. Dianne’s husband, Bruce, will be matching the funds raised by the BVUUF team, so your donation would be DOUBLED!
The CROP Hunger Walk motto is “We walk because THEY walk”. Marginalized people all over the world walk daily, not only for food, but also for shelter, water, safety, education, health care, and work. Walking in the CROP Hunger Walk and/or donating to support a walker are ways we can make their lives easier and even save lives. There is also another link to a video about how CROP Walks help mothers to care for their families, below. It has been well documented that helping women and girls helps EVERYONE!
