Giving is Your Friend with Benefits

by Patti Micklin

We are seeing some light at the end of the pandemic tunnel. Even still, it’s been a long slog and mental health has been hit hard. Recognizing everyone’s situations are their own and unique, we do have a suggestion for lifting the funk you may be experiencing.

Cultivate generosity all year.

There’s no local, state or national giving day just around the corner. Tax filing (for those who don’t extend) is now behind us. And yet, you are probably still hearing from your favorite causes because needs remain high.

For your own benefit, we suggest you give, if you can, whenever you can. Help others, because you’ll actually be helping yourself too. If you’re primarily a year-end donor, reflect for a moment on how great it feels. You’ve impacted the lives of people or animals that you may never get to know. And when you hear the results of Colorado Gives Day or #GivingTuesday, you know you’re part of that collective goodness.

Why not enjoy those warm and fuzzy feelings more often?

The science backs it up, pointing to numerous health benefits. Generosity can help lower blood pressure, increase self-esteem, lessen depression and stress levels, add longevity, and give an increased sense of happiness. This study shows that even just the thought of making a philanthropic donation has positive effects on the brain.

Opportunities to give can be found everywhere. Support to your friend’s Facebook birthday favorite cause campaign. Surprise and delight your own favorite organization by becoming a monthly donor. Tap into your Donor Advised Fund mid-year for distributions and turn the corners of your mouth up into a heartwarming smile. Sign up for that 5k Race benefitting something you care about, and you’ll improve your physical and emotional wellbeing.

It’s been a tough time for everyone in one way or another. We need each other, always.

Our community will thank you for it.
