In mid-January 2025, a group of SVP Partners, accompanied by staff member Katie MacDonald, embarked on a 10-day adventure through Cuba. Organized by Partner Jenny Desmond and Vive Más Tours, and led by our incredible Cuban guide, Roger, this journey was more than just sightseeing—it was a dive into the heart and soul of Cuba. Bruce Henderson, who is an SVP Partner with his wife, Ruth, summed it up well, “Every day was an adventure and an educational experience in culture, food, dance and history…just amazing!” Here are a few highlights.
Our adventure began in Havana, where history and modern life intertwine in a colorful display of colonial architecture, vintage cars, and lively streets. A highlight of our time in the capital was a 1955 Chevy driving tour, giving us a chance to cruise through the city in true Cuban style.
As the sun set, we dined in the courtyard of a local restaurant and immersed ourselves in Havana’s thriving music scene, dancing the night away to the rhythms of local musicians.
Varadero: A Slice of Paradise
Leaving the city behind, we headed to the stunning beaches of Varadero. Here, we swam in crystal-clear waters, soaked up the sun, and took in the coastal scenery. We visited the historic DuPont Mansion where we learned about its storied mafia past and enjoyed the panoramic ocean views.
Cuba’s beauty extends far beyond its beaches and cities. As we traveled through a palm tree-filled mountain range, we were treated to a farm-to-table Cuban lunch cooked over a traditional wood-burning stove. The farmers were kind and generous, offering a true taste of Cuba’s culinary traditions.
Trinidad: Waterfalls and Salsa Moves
The colonial town of Trinidad welcomed us with its cobblestone streets and colorful facades. A hike to a waterfall in the El Cubano Nature Reserve brought us even closer to Cuba’s natural wonders, as we trekked through lush landscapes, discovered local birds, and enjoyed a refreshing swim near the waterfall.
Of course, no visit to Cuba is complete without embracing its love for music and dance. We took part in a group salsa dance lesson, learning from the best and stepping into the rhythm of Cuban culture. Staff member Katie MacDonald shared, “As a trained dancer in my youth, it was so fun to get to learn a few Cuban salsa moves with my husband and friends! Dancing on the rooftop and under the stars was a truly magical experience.”
Our journey concluded in the charming city of Camagüey, located in the heart of Cuba. Exploring the city by bike taxi, we visited local art galleries, spoke with local artisans, and admired the local farmer’s market.
On our final evening, our guide’s family welcomed us into their home for a beautiful homemade meal—a testament to the warmth and hospitality of the Cuban people. We ended the night with one last opportunity to enjoy live salsa music, celebrating an unforgettable trip.
A Journey to Remember
Beyond the stunning landscapes and rich history, what stood out most during our time in Cuba was the warmth of its people. We connected with locals, enjoyed delicious Cuban cuisine, and gained a deeper understanding of the country’s complex history.
Cuba is a place of contrasts—beauty and struggle, tradition and change—all blending together to create something truly special. Our journey was one of discovery, connection, and inspiration. If you ever have the chance to visit Cuba, we highly encourage you to go! As SVP Partner Dianne Ladd said, “We had a MARVELOUS tour to Cuba!”
